Section 161 of Railway act indicates “If any person driving or leading a vehicle is negligent in crossing an unmanned level crossing, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to one year.”

Section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that “Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing shall cause the vehicle to stop and the driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk up to the level crossing and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side and then pilot the motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side before the railway track is crossed”

However due to non-following of relevant rules by the road users, many accidents are occurring resulting in loss of precious life  at unmanned level crossings.

Suggest solutions for reducing accidents at unmanned level crossings.

Level Crossings can be automated. As such, all manually operated ones are closed a specified time before the train is scheduled to pass. What can be done is that this very simple process of opening and closing the gates can be entirely automated, based on estimated time of passage of the train through the area. Although this might be unfeasible in urban areas due to congestion and indisciplined chaos, it would be much easier to do the same in lesser-crowded rural areas.

Sir,railway should give priority to unmanned level crossing to reduce disaster at such crossings.it can generate revenue for such work by providing hoardings to business organisations at such level crossings.I have seen small shops near crossings at railway property.some amount can be charged from them which will be invested for fencing of such crossings.

Railway to enhance efficiency and revenue:- - Use of aadhar card bar coding for ticket booking for reservarion and while travelling it should be mandatory to carry Aadhar card and TC should have machine to veryfy the aadhar card with actual finger prints using biometric verification of aadhar from database - it will help in security as any fraudulant person can be easily traced - it will bring curtain on lots of midoing of agents and other people in ticket booking

Now a day in railway their is a drive to construct LHS (low height subway) at unmanned level crossing.but first of all the priority shall be given to manned level crossing. As my experience people are only trying to achieve the target by closing level crossing. No proper system to control to fill the Lhs with rain water. It seems it may become only a Lucca pond.
