Section 161 of Railway act indicates “If any person driving or leading a vehicle is negligent in crossing an unmanned level crossing, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to one year.”

Section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that “Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing shall cause the vehicle to stop and the driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk up to the level crossing and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side and then pilot the motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side before the railway track is crossed”

However due to non-following of relevant rules by the road users, many accidents are occurring resulting in loss of precious life  at unmanned level crossings.

Suggest solutions for reducing accidents at unmanned level crossings.

Step 1. Drivers of trains must be trained and told to slow the trains to a speed where they can control or stop the train if any accidental situation occur at such level crossings as human life is more valuable than some times delay. Step 2. Railway authority must carry a survey to find out in which area the accidents numbers are more and to start to build a subway or flyover on such places one by one. This costs railway to their budget so till then step 1 must be followed.

Reservation of train ticket starts before 60 days but within few minutes (sometimes ),within few hours all ticket sold out .But on the other hand tickets are always available some brokers shop near all measure stations around the country .THIS IA ALL POSSIBLE DUE TO ID No NOT MENTIONED ON EACH TICKET .THIS PROBLEM CAN BE SOLVED BY 'DOING MANDATORY ORIGINAL ID NO AND NAME AS IT IS ON VALID ID ,AND BY PROVIDING TTE TECHNICAL SUPPORT OF CHECKING ID PROOF.

I agree with the suggestion given by Mmr Gulshan Chawla that weight sensors can be implanted within 2 km of the crossing & automated gate will be closed after a warning for 15 seconds. A sign board of the system must be put on the crossing to educate about the warning and consequences.

It is not at all difficult, if can put electronic sensors to switch indicators and the gates get closed. Please advertise in News papers to select smart companies who can come with their presentation. Please support them for their research. In case they come with good technology, please reward them in an attractive manner.

By using wireless sensor technology not only at unmanned level crossings but also at manned crossings can help in decreasing accidents. Weighing sensors should be implanted 3 kms both side of the crossing under the rails and these should be connected with automatic opening and closing barriers at crossing. As the train reaches the track at the point barriers will close and when train passes the 3 kms of crossing.barriers will automatically open.it will help I feel.

make a survey of most unmanned crossing points. though it is not possible to put crossing infrastructure there, we can put there only signals (and which should be red only before 2 minutes of arrival of train so that people can wait.because if u put red signal before 5 or 10 minutes, people will just ignore it...) on both sides. this will definitely reduce accidents.along with signals sirens can also put there to aware those which cant see the signal(like students in the bus)

Unmanned level crossing at gates were the 60% of gate keepers are allowing the Public to cross the Track at closed condition. If control of gate keepers with Public can minimize 70% Accidents.
