India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

Preparation should be before the Disaster, Management and action is must during Disaster and Assess after the disaster--we cannot afford to interchange the order. Most of the time we are never prepared for any kind of disaster-be it tsunami, floods, earthquake, cyclones, heat & cold waves etc. Communicative preparedness is totally lacking in our society. Emergency plans have to be tested and put in order by Government, service agencies like the Red cross and the public should be trained.

Modiji First of all prepare a list of disaster prone areas in our country with the help of remote sensing. Then think of which type of preparedness should be followed according to the natural hazards and the type of severity in each area.

Plastic blocks drainage and submerge towns during flood season. The best way is making plastic roads which are more sustainable. In fact these roads are built in Bangalore and others can follow the same.

we are lack in data. Good quality data and information is very much required for planning and good governance. hence web based disaster preparation and system information has to be developed and mobile based information is prime work for disaster management.

Waste Management - Is in line with Swachh Bharat mission. Disposing plastics in an irresponsible way. Plastics stay as plastics in the soil and is a major cause of water clogging during rainy days. Citizens should be more responsible in disposing the plastics off and shouldn't be dumping it in street corners, open areas. Avoid usage of plastic. Govt should initiate a movement and ban plastics completely, even if it is a shopping bag. Encourage paper and request people to carry their own bags

Most civilian administration get their posting by paying bribe to departmental ministers,so how will competent persons be present in times of crisis. Also there is no incentive to do out of the ordinary as only thing that effects one's career is disposable amount of black money to bribe ministers.

Sir every month appox 10 people after sinking in river Kshipra. Sir Due to people dont know swimming and lack of life guard at the bank of the river. Sir still we dont adopt such kind of sys of life guard on the famous rivers or pilgrimage places where a lots of people came for holy dip. In my view either schools should teach basic life saving skill, swimming, first aid and CPR practices and also the fire fighting to the all the children and all the employees too.
