India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

Technology must be used & people must be aware of Techniques that can be easily implemented in disaster prone areas. Always, there must be a backup plan with the authorities & people so that they can use the on time resources & stay precautioned & safe at the time of any uncertainty or an accident or a huge disaster. Disaster management institutes can plan a roadmap for this purpose & explain it to people through all means of communication. Many more things can be done.

Hi Friends ,most of the postings are intresting and informative but dont all of us feel that the preparedness must concentrate at two levels mainly citizen level and second government level. Then what do all of you feel can be done at the citizen level for readiness by individual homes and their members. Please ,keep in mind all that we need to keep ready for an emergency not forgetting the exit routes may be one or two. What first kit need to be in place ,medicines ,torchlight ,rope ,money etc

Policy must be made by central government as to how to react to disaster specially manmade like say a nuclear strike. People must be educated about dos and donts. Without peoples participation no one can suceed. So emphasis must be on educated and hardworking youth. Teams must be formed which contain doctors and nurses to help as health is major aspect in almost every disaster. Food water and shelter are also imp. Gov can help in this by suppling food water and shelter materials to affected area

Disaster preparedness is a huge topic as disasters are of two types 1) natural 2) manmade. Both have very bad impact on lives of people affdcted. 100% disaster preparedness is not practically possible as we have a vast list of to do or to have things but yes we can do for majority of issues. Local educated and hardworking people can be selected and taught to analyse risks in their area and they can be guided to make others aware and local public potentials must be used to control damage.

Solution to dust in Delhi is probably more greenary. We have good tree cover, we need to have grass revolution across city especially on medians and shoulders of road. Where it is not possible lay interlock tiles. Cover all dusty road sides with good carpet of grass.
