India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

Our technical information system & human resource management is capable of handling any type of disaster. But still need more coordination between the different government department like IMD & NDMA for timely, accurate & effective information exchange,so maximum disaster effected people should be prevented timely & do't waste our resources to undesirable, misleading fact, that requires cross checking information carefully before any action,by this way we can save most of the expenditure.

With slowly worming world environment, we should be ready for world famine. Because whether we are ready or not monsoon has already started changing its behaviour, within one century we may see changes in whether patterns along global famine. Hence we should take precautionary steps as tapping of wast Himalayan water resources which are currently wasted under name of Assam/Bihar floods. Mr. Dastur has alreadysuggested Garland Canal Scheme. I think it is high time we should commit to the cause.

coastal areas which are prone to climate change need to have disaster management group and underground electric lines and flood hit areas need to build wells or diversions to other areas so that water can move to some other place rather than create damage to property and lives, hilly tops need to have cement logs or tree needed to be planted to prevent land slides ,earth quake prone areas need to build homes that r built with woods or some light materials

Uttarakhand lies in the earthquake prone area, with some of the areas in zone 5. Last year floods have made us victim to new disaster. People are leaving their home, migrating to the plains in search of new life. But instead of migrating, we can save our lives by being prepared for the next disaster. This can only be done when we rise above all social bondage and care for humanity only. In the times of distress, this world becomes a family. If we care for others we can save large number of peopl
