Several studies have shown that school children do not seem to acquire age appropriate skills in reading, writing and numeracy. There is a need to explore the various approaches to improve teaching–learning at the elementary stage. The objective of this theme is to understand the issues of low learning achievement levels in elementary schooling, assess the system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and suggest ways and methods of improving the learning outcomes of school children which would result in enhancing the quality of elementary education.

most people are dependent on english because education from 16-25 is entirely in english, so they dont have vocabulary to speak like adults in their mother tongues and hence become dependent on english

The new education policy should be devoted to improving the levels of elementary education. First and foremost, NO DETENTION POLICY to be scrapped immediately. This policy has led to low levels of education among children. Without even having the basic knowledge of 1st grade, children reach upto class 9 which is the main reason of the current failure of our education system. Children have stopped studying because they get promoted to next class even if he/she has falied in all the subjects.

The new education policy should focus on early childhood education. These are very important years for children. How they learn later depends on the environment they get in the first six years. A physically and emotionally safe environment which focuses on a holistic development is important. A policy for preschools which ensures safety and quality should be in place.

Focus area in elementary education should be in developing a strong foundation for future learning. Learning outcomes should focus on skills needed to study the subject areas. Encouraging children to be independent learners and helping them move away from rote learning is important. At this age grades should not be the end but a complete understanding of the basics is important. A healthy environment which promotes risk taking in school is needed.

Encourage childrens to think on what they are learning and how they can apply their knowledge. The child should know why they are learning the things they are being taught. Link the lessons they are being taught to the real world situations.

the persisting low levels of learning can be attributed to a large extent to the fact that children come into school by age 5 or 6 by which time neuroscience research shows 90 percent of their brain growth is already complete. This growth is influenced by thier early learning environment and good quality early childhood education below 6 years has proven impact. This stage of education is the foundation stage and should be included by MHRD as the first stage of education and given due priority
