India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

what i suggest is to export the surplus to foreign countries. The government wont have to do anything it just needs to clear the complicated rules and regulation which prevents our export. just clear those rules and there will be many brokers or firms who are ready to export each and every commodity in which there is sufficient profit to make. Profit will drive many others in this business it will create employment too and it will also gave a decent price to farmer for his produce.

Sir Firstly,we need to increase warehousing facilities and cold storages for farmers. Farmers' cooperatives can be established to use such facilities in common. The govt. has various baords like Coir Board, Tea Board, Coffee Board etc. On similar lines, an authority can be established which will ensure that no middlemen exploit the farmers and that farmers get true value for their produce. Also, the Food Processing Industries should be started in areas where fruit-production is abundant.

by digital geo informatics.... so we can know how much is produced where..and where that product is needed in the country....and take measures..to reach that place...(then we can get more money..bcz we are transporting to place, where ts needed..so more money)

Encourage village specific processing units set up to ensure processing of half of the harvested fruits and vegetables.Use technology mapping of the fruit and vegetable growers,so that the communication flows about when it is harvested and it can be picked up and stored at the nearest cold storage and then transported further.

Sir, almost 40% of our produce is lost due to poor management. The loss starts from the farmer and continues right to the retailer. The main cause is poor knowledge of storage practises, limited collection centers, rat & cockroach infestation, lack of safety from the elements - rain, dew, lack of dedicated transport facilities - cold storage & regional officials being apathetic to the cause of the marginal farmer. Urgent education of food storage through the hierarchy is required to stem the rot

NO OF LOW COST FOOD/CROP PRESERVATION TECHNOLOGIES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED IN DIFFERENT INSTITUTIONS WAITING FOR APPLIED USES.THERE ARE NO OF DIFFERENT CONVENTIONALMETHOD USED IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF COUNTRY.GOVT NEEDS TO GIVE A PROJECT TO CAPABLE INSTITUTION FOR SYNTHESIZING ALL THESE TECHNOLOGIES AND LAUNCH A VIGOROUS EDICATIONAL/AWARENESS CAMPIGN FOR MAKING THESE TECHNOLOGIES AVAILBLE TO FARMERS AT NO COST.

There is a need to create a buffer zone for perishable agricultural product through FCI. Small farmers are not in position to afford proper storage of such product, mediators are taking undue privilege. The margin is too much between the farmer and customer. If govt starts storing these product like other rice,wheat then surely there will be favour for farmer, customer, low price hike and saving of perishable food.

There should be a farmer commitee in each panchayat and its work will be to follow propee marketing and distribution chanel and also govt. Should make cold storage warehous for affordable storage of post harvest fruits nd vegetables.
