India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Most of high investment storage projects have/will fail without local involvement as they do not consider local conditions. Locals should be given a share in income and their views should be respected to ensure their participation and ultimate success of project.

India is diverse and storage mechanisms and facilties should be developed to suit local conditions in cost-effective manner. This can be done effectively by local Panchayats and bodies. These local bodies should be given incentives to develop these facilties. Incentives should be linked to actual production.

Village Panchayats & local bodies should be given incentives for developing storage facilities. If the village / panchyat produces so much of they would be given a grant/incentive which is linked to qty sold in market.

Time is key factor to prevent post harvest losses. So transport must be made available on priority to transport these perishables to users well in time. Instead of centralised large storage/cold storages Small storage facilities closer to growers must be encouraged. Small scale food processing units closer to growers shall prevent the losses.

Search engine be created with commodity detailing based HSN & BTN. Make customer friendly. Macro-micro planning. Consumer requirements are fed in search engine, commodity wise. Producers capabilities, profile & list of products, with cost data & price tags are also fed, commodity wise. Consumer at a click gets list of producers. On selecting a producer, customer will have all details. On selecting a product, demand get registered with the producer to deliver goods at door step in time. DDS.

Producing first & then pushing for sale be stopped. Macro-micro planning be done. Consumer requirements & farmers capabilities to produce & meet them be ascertained by extensive survey, online etc. Communication be organised. Groups of consumers & farmers be formed, brought together & well connected. Farmers to produce what is demanded & distribute amongst consumers. Consumer endeavour to buy only from producers. Middlemen, transport, handling, storage at intermediate stages totally eliminated.

Dear Sir,post harvest loses can be reduced by puting or imposing good cold storage services and introducing food processing industries in cluster.All food processing licenses should be easy and fast.

Govt should provide an e-market place to farmers where they can sell their fruits and vegetables directly to the required customer at reasonable price and site should have all regional language which will help our farmers of all regions. Now every farmer can get their money directly in their account because now we all are very familiar with banking with the help of jan dhan yojna

It is quite amazing that companies like Aditya Birla, Reliance and Tata can have good stock quality maintained for a longer duration compared to direct market vendors. Come to think of this we are seeing a lack of investment on the supply chain, which includes packaging and temperature/humidity controlled environements for storage. There must be adequate licensing control for the middle men involved, that licences for supplies can be provided to those who have adequate process control quality.

Grow according to need. Imbalance result in loss. Its not difficult to find future needs & suggest farmers. First of all agriculture universities shd learn to approach farmers and guide rather than sitting in a room.
