India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Hence the cost of the vegetable is too high and the end users are sufferings because of the price hike on the vegetables. The real benefiter is traders only. If we abolish the trader’s role in the vegetable marketing, we will get significant improvement in the vegetable marketing contd..

2. At the seller point, they are also taking the consideration of decompose situation of the vegetables and increasing some % of the cost on the vegetables other than their profits to compensate if the vegetable gets decompose and selling the vegetables @ high cost . contd..

Which caused lot of chances for the vegetables will get in to unused condition because it is highly perishable in nature. The traders are purposefully doing these kinds of activities because, to get the price down with the former. The former also, in order to avoid this situation, they are offering very low price to the trades. In fact, some times the formers are not at all getting their yield cost from their selling’s. But the traders are selling very high price to the seller. contd..

Different commodities need different type of treatments. If we are looking at solutions which start after fruits and vegitables reach mandi, its fruitless. We need to provide corruption free warehousing access directly to farmer suited to the crop pattern of the area where warehouse is being built. The slips which farmers get in return eventually should get traded, and the buyer should come and pick it up directly from the warehouse. We need to bridge the distances between buyer seller.

We can do it with present resources. 1. Create Supply Chain Management System Software (as deployed by various countries) for live update of stock availability and movement. 2. Integrate it with state, public and private sector food companies (Mother Dairy, Amul, etc) to meet their needs through DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND COOPERATION. 3. Make use of various schemes and databases of Ministry of Agriculture. 4. Implement it on Tehsil level. 5. Create awareness through ongoing MoA advertisements

Effective and efficient transportation to the well equipped warehouses or cold storages would help the farmers to get better price for their produces. Further, promote and effectively channelise the traditional knowledge of storage of grains, rice, vegetables including roots which we have been practicing time immemorial. Not only are these produces organic, their conservation is cheaper and provides gainful employment to rural youth. Health is wealth.

The farmers are to be made aware that when should they harvest their crop or fruits & how they can store them till they are sold to further sellers also they should be told to let the fruits ripe naturally ,this will increase the sweetness & the freshness of the fruit & then ,fresher the fruit more will it be sold cumulative efforts of each to educate farmers in will help a lot. this can be done from the farming teaching schools held by government.
