India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Sir, We also need to identify actual production ratio of every taluka/tehsil and develop cold storage rooms as per their requirements near by their market yard. This kind of Infrastructure development helps farmers to stop long traveling and save their maximum production in comparison of today.

To reduce the post harvest losses in supply chain of foods and vegetables the following modes can be adopted: 1. Provide cold storage chain by cooperative method or on public private partnership basis. 2. One nodal agency should be there which can create live databse of all producers so that demand and supply of these things can be ensured. 3. Govt. should ecourge entrepreneurs in establishing food processing units so that excess production can be used. 4. Educate farmers and provide latest

when police are only used to protect politicians neither farmers get protection to sell their goods directly to the consumer,since middlemen will eliminate the farmers for their profits.Even an FIR cannot be lodged without political help?what is this?when the public are sure police will register and follow-up their complaint,then only farmers can venture to sell their produce to the consumer directly

why do we need middlemen? farmers should be motivated and protected to form groups and bring their produce directly to the nearest market,farmers will get a good price and public will gets veggies and fruits cheap.At present both farmers and public are being fleeced by a series of middlemen.

I got a simple solution, each county needs a number of farms so that people can go and do self-service this way people get fresh fruit and veg also the local farmers get money.

Action starts at farm. Harvesting to be done early hours to avoid damage due to desiccation. Packaging in such a way that produce is protected against direct sunrays and also aerated. This can be facilitated through extension services. Main losses can be reduced through processing infrastructure for which it is essential prerequisite to grow produce with twin objective of fresh marketing and processed produce and accordingly growing appropriate verities. Also there is need to do generic promoti.
