India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Depending on the availability of fruits and vegetables in the locality, can be sold at farmer's market at reasonable and affordable prices without the interference of the intermediaries. The excess eatables can be distributed in schools, Anganwadi centers, Health Centers, etc !!

The fruits and vegetables which are excess can be distributed to Government school. Children can get health food. these can be fruits like banana, Gauva.. which will be wasted if stored for long.. there are many children who have never tasted fruits in their life....

I think it can be controlled by creating agricultural zones and introducing special warehouses and processing units for each zones. Further the supply chain controlled by these regional centres.

technology exists. only application is needed. we can design, manufacture and make available small, medium and large cold boxes which can be even fitted on trollies for mobility. The produce can be sorted, packed post harvest at the or near the harvest location and stored in these cold boxes. These cold boxes can be conveyed to the interim cold storages and finally to the market. All the wastage can be cut to virtually zero. The savings can pay for the packing and storage.

There are around 15 lacks students are pursuing their engineering graduation from 3345 colleges every year in India. All these students need to submit a project in the final year. My suggestion is to take a live project by developing some facility in a village using their technology and based upon that their evaluation should be done which improves the village empowerment and leads to adarsh gram...

Ban use of chemical insecticides and pesticides, chemical fertilizers to have healthy food. Products should be collected right from the field and processed at the earliest. Research units to be established at district levels. Consultancy to be channelized from experts.

Transport seems to be big factor in it. If timely delivery of material can be done to end buyer it will both reduce transport as well as inflative prices. There must be different lanes for truck and small vehicles, thus reducing jams and transportation costs. Our highways should be real highways. Connectivity of villages to Mandis should be ensured.

Fruits and vegetables can be stored in a area when it is harvested in excess.A go-down which preserves all fruits,vegetables..it can have suitable storage equipment, temperature and environment to store enough.when the fruit or vegetable are in demand we can use the one in go-down..thus we can reduce the losses of fruits and vegetables and it can ultimately keeps the price rate of fruits and vegetables as stable..
