India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

1) Better storage facility in every village. 2) FIFO (First In, First Out) system at storage. 3) Supply at market place based on order or sale volume. 4) Sell these perishable items at customer door in big societies in cities for faster sale. 5) Market information & availability to be given to farmers before his crop is ready to cut. 6) Good packing bags to be used. 7) Special packing material to be researched for life increase of fruits & vegetables. 8) Training to farmers on material handling.

There are few ways 1. Identify demand and accordingly divert fruits / vegetables to various markets. Most of the time people will ignore nearby markets and target only cities to sell. Many times this will result in losses due to distance. 2. Centralized storage places which reachable to every farmer 3. More research in generating seeds which yields vegetables with long storage capacity 4. Educate all the farmers about minimum storage and transport techniques 5. Transport facility with storage

There is no major loss due to supply chain. This is wrong perception. The real loss is in market. people not ready to buy vegetable at post harvest time. So farmer get very low price of their products.There are several other issues like malnutrition, anaemia,overweight body,anger, depression,disease, inflation, huge import of foods, fruits. storage space etc.etc. these all issue are inter-connected. So look these all issues carefully. My two ideas will address all issue. detail discussion req

The real facts is that post harvest loss of vegetable and fruits due to people do not focus seasonal food eating. I can give ideas which will motivate peoples to buy post harvest vegetable and fruits. this way loss minimize. There is no other options. Farmers will also get good price. I have also written one,lyric which will motivate peoples to buy seasonal products. I am open for detail discussion.

Another suggestion is that we can always put some food processing industry for the particular produce of that place and process the food.

i may not be an expert but i think we can check with american methods since they have very long haulage but still supply everything everywhere.

Improve the channels of supply. For example if it is railways, then add a few AC trains for the supply of fruits and veggies and otherwise also the goods train containing perishable goods must be given top priority.

The loss is inherent and we all can only reduce it...means government if possible can build cold storage houses and divert the excess to demanding sector subject to good transportation and less indirect tax burden.... Nd if nothing can be done then better serve them to stray animals...

establish common national market of goods and services (NCMGS), of which Goods and Service Tax (GST) is a beginning, to ensure free unhindered movement of all food items, including fruits, vegetables, dairy across country. Presently, whenever any truck of food items start moving from producer to consumer, across country, it has to encounter tolls, octrois, police/local bodies bribe barriers after every 100 Km, multiple boundaries/tax barriers. How can modiji bring down food item prices ?

Dear Prime minister,I think our Swachh Bharat movement is creating lots of awareness among citizens. I think our country is still lagging behind only because of Lack Of PUNCTUALITY and too much of LAZINESS among youth, i think government should start some movement and make some acts to make people follow TIME and come out of LAZINESS.
