Existence of insanitary latrines is the root cause of manual scavenging. As per the ‘Houselisting and Housing Census Data, 2011’, there were about 26 lakh insanitary latrines in the country in 2011. All existing insanitary latrines need to be identified and either demolished or converted into sanitary latrines under the provisions of the MS Act.

What innovations can be used to convert insanitary latrines into sanitary latrines in shortest possible time?

Manual Scavenging is an outcome and not a cause. If we do skill development and train the scavengers then they would not like to do this dirty job. Similarly if we have a proper waste screening system and disposal method then the scavengers will not have any place to scavenge on. So this menace can be eradicate if the other two issues of skill development and waste management are effective. Let us FOCUS on root cause and SOLVE Multiple problems.

A lot of changes is going on in our area (Cubbonpet, Bangalore) The water lines from BWSSB isnt providing the pressure enough to fill the sump (underground water tank). I have seen a lot illegal water connections and people fixin a pump to the mainline in order to fulfill their requirement. But this has lead to many problems with poor who cannot afford for this sort of luxury. Officials in the BWSSB office provide careless answers and one guy insists all to have a pump fixed to mainline..

underground drainage system should be adopted in every town where urban local bodies exit. Lack of this system gives way for insanitary latrines. Public latrines are very less in number compared to the population without having latrines at their residing place. Ratio should not be more than 20 persons per latrine. Insufficient latrines entertain open defecation.Maintaining them in good and clean condition is a must. All ULBs should take a serious step towards it.

First of all in order to have clean India municipal corporation/Nigam boards must implement proper plan for proper disposal of bio-degradable waste and no degradable waste(Refer Satyamev Jayate Episode on waste mgmt). We all can clean our house, locality, school , street but where to throw the garbage. We neither have place nor any facility(auto, trolley) provided by municipal corporation for the collection of same. Our India will only become clean if garbage is collected from door to door
