Existence of insanitary latrines is the root cause of manual scavenging. As per the ‘Houselisting and Housing Census Data, 2011’, there were about 26 lakh insanitary latrines in the country in 2011. All existing insanitary latrines need to be identified and either demolished or converted into sanitary latrines under the provisions of the MS Act.

What innovations can be used to convert insanitary latrines into sanitary latrines in shortest possible time?

Aerobic toilet working is based on the principle of wind resistance and degradation of fecal matter by aerobic bacteria. As the flaps open when the train gathers speed, the waste material thrown by passengers in the toilet, falls down. The blades in the digester chamber turn as the train gathers speed allowing aeration for aerobic decomposition of the fecal matter by bacteria present in the EM solution.Excreta does not fall on the platforms and maintains hygiene.

My invention is a dropping- catcher which holds the droppings from a stationary train. I have developed this by cutting the lower portion of the Hopper pipe of the existing railway toilet in a slanting cut on both sides, in a semicircular (half round) shape, we can fix/fit two flaps on it. When the train is stationery, the flaps remain closed due to the use of dual torsion spring. When the train attains a speed of 40Km/h or more, the flaps open because of air resists on flap

polythene bags cannot be fully avoided so i suggest that u ask people to collect the polythene bags they get and give to a shopkeeper or a vegetable vendor which would be beneficial both to the environment nd the shopkeeper

Manual Scavenging can be eliminated with two strategies:-(1) Children below 14 yrs may be strictly picked up by administration & put in Govt funded orphanage-cum-boarding schools without entertaining any claim of parents & those above 14 should be engaged in farm activities like dairy, piggery etc. under AGL Universities after checking mandatory primary education. (2) For others, the rehabilitation may be through micro-credit programs under supervision of Co-operative universities or good NGOs.
