Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Increase number of goods trains. Tie up with professional courier, cargo and movers and packers companies. If professional service is given, it will generate a good business. Start premium class bogies (like the First class in international flights) and charge them heavily. Keep smaller trains in routes with low passenger response. Save money wherever possible without compromising passenger safety.

* Reserve all side lower seats only for RAC for heavy routes. Don't allow booking for side lower seats. It will decrease the ticket cancellation rate for WLs and increase availability.

1) A lot of people depend on trucks to transport their belongings while shifting their homes from one city to another. If the railways can give a safe and reliable service for this, it will be great. 2) Improve cloakroom services at major junctions, including clean toilet facilities that can be charged. 3) Installation of solar panels in all major stations

I suggest the following initiatives, to increase the non-tariff revenue of Indian Railways: (1) Installation of Solar Panels above the Railway tracks. It will power the admin buildings and excess power can be sold to Grid. PV Sheds above tracks will reduce the fan/AC requirement in train. (2) Build the railway owned hotels in all major stations to earn additional income. (3) Convert waste-land along the tracks into growing food products. The requirement of energy particularly electrical is very high in IR, it will be viable to go in for installation of solar panels on the roof tops of railway platforms and passenger coaches. Wind turbines can be installed in the premises of the railway stations. These measures will make each stations / trains generate power and reduce the energy bills of IR to a large extent.

(1) At major stations, construction of well maintained all-in-one entertainment and refreshment halls for people of all ages with amusement games, library, gym, yoga, food facilities etc. can boost the non-tariff revenue. (2) Construction of more number of retiring rooms at tourist locations.

resting and refreshing is to be the main focus for increasing railway income. The present rest rooms and refreshing toilet facilities are insufficient for a majority of travellers. The more spacious toilet facilities and spacious rest rooms with proper security and privacy protection at reasonable rates and strict online booking along with long journey ticket numbers( to avoid local travelers) will be definitely a good choice to increase railway income.
