Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

1)Introduce free wifi in trains with Contextual ads in a PPP mode (google already providing free wifi to selective stations) this can leads to new dimensions in railways ecommerce. 2)Railways may introduce national zonal passes to indian citizens and assured seat for pass holders. ( budget on pricing with tension free travel, who will miss that weekend trip, increases tourism) i think only foreigners has this now. 3) you can add vending machines for snacks in nonstop train

Add on board facilities for people with disabilities. They sometimes find it difficult to get down on a station and buy stuff for themselves.

idea no.1:railway hotel:utilize all the existing officers and other rest houses at major city stations by opening them to passengers on Pre booking and reservations and instant booking.for this first of all these rest houses need to be developed to at least 3 star accommodations. other than this railway through irctc may act as a channel (paytm)by giving online booking to near by hotels and offer passengers special discount on the basis of PNR ,may offer combo packages hotels and train fare .

If you are importing a particular product than you may use economies to scale principal and share the quantities with the manufacturing industry. This will reduce the overall cost for the industry and also result in higher profits for the railways.

Share IRCTC features with private operators for a fee. You can also use the IRCTC portal for digital advertisements which has the potential to generate high revenues. Tonnes of user data generated by Railways every year could be sold to marketing companies for promotional activities.

You may create a procedure to rent unused land / other railway property to various private and government bodies for use in return of rent. Possible usage could be temporary storage facilities, short term training institutes, parking space for heavy vehicles, space for Night shelter houses.

Bring shorter distance trains for eg every 100km or inter districts of a state in profitable routes(routes in which people buy tickets and travel) with a defined frequency in a day, this would help people to depend more on the railways for their daily work. You can save lot on water bills by arranging bio-metric toilets in all trains. Food after paying 120/- is also not to the mark.
