The central government-run RML Hospital on Tuesday called off its nine-day strike it had been observing in protest against the alleged rape and murder of a Kolkata medic, even as other resident doctors' bodies hailed the Supreme Court's intervention in the case. The RML RDA said it called off the strike after the Centre's acceptance of all demands put forward by their peers from across India.
"The Ministry of Health and the Medical Superintendent's office have assured that all necessary permissions for enhanced security measures at medical institutions have been obtained, with a 45-day timeline set for implementation.
"The ministry also pledged to tighten security across all central government hospitals and issue advisories to state governments," Ram Manohar Lohia resident doctors' association said in a statement.

The protestors demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who also doubles up as the state's health and home minister.
The police had put up barricades at several roads leading to Swasthya Bhavan, which the ABVP activists tried to break through, a senior officer said.
"We only seek the resignation of the chief minister. The incident which happened at the hospital is unimaginable," a woman member of ABVP said.
Meanwhile, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) continued their strike in solidarity with the rape and murder of the PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found in the RG Kar Hospital's seminar room on August 9. The Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer the next day in this connection.
Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation, after expressing a lack of satisfaction with the Kolkata Police.

CJI: We have been apprised of the fact that there were around 700 resident doctors in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital ... following the incident.. most of the resident doctors have left their place of duty and now 30-40 female and 60 male doctors remain in their hostels.
CJI: It is essential to maintain safe conditions for doctors to return to their duty, not only to pursue their own education but to address medical care to their patients. Thus we have been assured by SG Mehta that CISF shall be deputed in sufficient numbers to guard the facility of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital ... Mr Sibal says there is no objection since the aim is to safeguard the place.
Sibal: But then they (CISF) will be responsible. There can't be two kinds of forces.
CJI adds to order: Any concern regarding to their (doctors') safety can be placed by an email to the registrar judicial of this court.

Justice Pardiwala: We made an appeal to doctors to resume duty as the marginalised are suffering. Now if we ask police to provide security to these women doctors then will this police protect the doctors? Which police will safeguard the hospital?
Updated at:20th Aug, 2024 at 1:08 PM
CJI: Let CISF provide security to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
SG: State knows who made the complaint to you.. let more security be provided to that person.
Updated at:20th Aug, 2024 at 1:08 PM
Advocate: There are 700 residents, 250 are ladies in total and now only 100 are remaining in all. 30 to 40 female residents and 60 male residents remain. Rest all have fled.
