The initiative to celebrate Maha Shivaratri at Shri Parshurameshwar Pura Mahadev Temple as a “Zero Waste Mahotsav” is a powerful step towards combining spirituality with environmental responsibility. Mahashivratri is not only a festival of devotion to Lord Shiva, but also a reminder of simplicity, balance, and harmony with nature. Organizing the festival in an eco-friendly manner can inspire thousands of devotees and create a model for sustainable religious celebrations across the region. One of the most important ideas is to completely eliminate single-use plastic during the Mahotsav. Plastic water pouches, disposable cups, thermocol plates, and plastic spoons should be banned within the temple premises. Instead, devotees can be encouraged to use steel utensils, clay cups, areca leaf plates, and reusable water bottles. Water refill stations with earthen pots and dispensers can be arranged at multiple locations to reduce bottled water waste.

A simple mobile monitoring system can help sanitation teams identify overflowing bins and maintain real-time cleanliness.
Eco-friendly decorations using bamboo, cloth and natural materials should replace thermocol and plastic flex boards. Solar-powered lighting can further support sustainable infrastructure.
Awareness campaigns using devotional messages like “Swachhta bhi Seva hai” and “Bhakti Bhi, Prakriti Bhi” can inspire behavioural change among devotees.
This initiative can help develop Baghpat as a national model for sustainable religious tourism by successfully combining faith, tradition, public participation and environmental responsibility under Mission LiFE and Swachh Bharat.

To transform the Mahashivratri Mela into a Zero Waste Mahotsav, a community-driven and technology-supported model can be implemented focusing on waste reduction, plastic-free practices and environmental awareness. A “Green Seva Volunteer Team” consisting of NCC, NSS students and local youth can guide visitors regarding waste segregation and cleanliness. Colour-coded bins for wet waste, dry waste and puja materials should be installed throughout the mela area. Organic waste and flower offerings can be converted into compost and eco-friendly incense products through local recycling initiatives. Single-use plastic should be completely banned inside the mela premises. Vendors can be encouraged to use biodegradable leaf plates, clay cups and reusable steel utensils through a refundable deposit system. Water refill stations should be installed to reduce plastic bottle waste.QR code based digital signboard can provides directions emergency supports awareness messages , reduces paper waste.
