Overall, raising the excise duty on sugar will lead to demand reduction in sugar that will lead to a healthier population. Even if we are on per capita basis low sugar consumers, our middle classes are high per capita users comparable to western societies, and reducing sugar consumption will benefit them the most.

7. More sugar will be available for export. Further increased sugar prices may reduce demand for cocoa, tea and coffee and more cocoa, tea and coffee may be exported earning foreign exchange for the country

5. The power of the sugar barons may reduce. However this may not be the case as they might become ethanol barons.
6. Sugarcane can be diverted to fuel grade ethanol production. Ethanol will reduce dependence om fossil and imported fuel and will be carbon neutral and environmental friendly.

4. As sugar and its derivatives have a direct effect on human heath, the number of diabetics in the country will reduce or stabilise. The amount spent on diabetic medicines will reduce and government resources for providing better health services for all will increase. The amount not spent on diabetic medicines can be diverted to other important diseases like malaria, dengue, etc.

3. Downstream industries like processed foods which use sugar as preservatives and liquor made using molasses will have price increase causing drop in demand. This will have positive health benefits for the citizenry.
