Kanaklata Barua (22 December 1924 – 20 September 1942) also called Birbala and Shaheed (martyr) Kanaklata Barua was an Indian freedom fighter from Assam who was shot dead while leading a procession bearing the National Flag during the Quit India Movement of 1942. During the Quit India Movement Kanaklata joined the Mrityu Bahini, a death squad comprising groups of youth from the Gohpur sub division of Assam. On 20 September 1942, the Bahini decided it would hoist the national flag at the local police station. A procession of unarmed villagers were led by Barua to do so. The police under Rebati Mahan Som the officer in-charge of the police station warned the procession of dire consequences if they proceeded with their plan. Undeterred by the police, the procession continued marching ahead when the police fired upon the procession. Kanaklata was shot and the flag she was carrying with her was taken up by Mukunda Kakoti who too was shot at. Both Kanaklata and Kakoti were killed.

Sorry, I don't know any unsung heroes. But have suggestion- instead of learning in History books about various British Viceroys in India, stories of such brave martyrs should be taught, which will make the young minds aware of the sacrifices of these brave men and make them patriotic and wish to join the armed forces. Traditional martial arts should be taught in schools, which will make them strong to fight any enemies.

I am a proud Indian to have strong, inspirational, and nationalist leadership, our PM Modiji. Modiji has already started identifying many common people in all walks of life who have actually contributed to building a nation. We have realized this when they are being awarded by Padma awards. However, I would request Modiji to form a committee of historians who can trace all the freedom fighters who participated in the freedom movement since 1857 and give them a place in history. There are many tribals who have laid their lives while fighting with Britishers. Two brothers from the Gowari tribe (Jama & Tima) from Tiroda Taluka of Bhandara district in Maharashtra were hanged during the freedom movement. They should get respect and honor in history. Jay Hind.
