Conventional education alone cannot meet the needs and aspiration of higher education. What proactive policies and strategies need to be devised and developed to encourage online education and overcome any implementation issues which are currently hindering its optimization? Also how can we strengthen ODL systems so as to ensure their quality and gain greater acceptability?

This must be taken care of. In distance learning courses, there must be few months training as mandatory, and after passing that only, the candidate must be given chance of appearing exams. Otherwise what is the meaning if someone takes a degree like this, without knowing any practical implementation of the even. Warm Regards, CA. Akhil Maheshwari

In, open or distance education and on line courses 'quality' is the main key with all and sundry offering it.Stringent standards need to be laid.Rural and semi urban areas may be given preference for offering these courses to reduce drop out cases due to poor affordability of further education.

totally agree. This is the direction we need to take to ramp up our speed of implementation- we don't have a choice. However, ODL needs to be used for: 1. improving proficiency in any subject, for all grade levels (remedial use) 2. Incredible teachers "teaching" from afar in classrooms where there are no teachers or a "low-functioning" teacher. This can be done live or recorded- based on resources/ schedules etc. 3. Offer courses that are not offered otherwise locally.

We have excellent study material available for undergraduate engineering students in the NPTEL site. It is important to make the use of these material (available freely) mandatory in private engineering colleges, where teaching is pathetic. These material would greatly compensate for the lack of teaching in these institutes.
