India Science (www.indiascience.in) is an Internet-based science Over-The-Top (OTT) TV channel. It is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt of India , implemented and managed by Vigyan Prasar (VP), an autonomous organisation of Department of Science and Technology. This 24x7 video platform is dedicated to science and technology knowledge dissemination, with a strong commitment to spreading scientific awareness especially with Indian perspectives, ethos and cultural milieu. The initiative is supported by National Council of Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), DST.

Science and Technology are the main driving forces of the nation and fundamental to the progress and growth. But there is a distinct difference between “science” and “scientific”.

What do you think, is the difference and where do you think they relate with each other? How do the two words contribute to building and reinforcing scientific temper among the youth? Send us your views!

Even the flash of insight, which characterizes many great scientific achievements, usually follows hard toil and reflection on the problem for long periods of time. As Thomas Alva Edison said “science is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration”.

Scientific temper involves many parameters. It is characterized by healthy scepticism, universalism, freedom from prejudice or bias, objectivity, open mindedness and humility, willingness to suspend judgement without sufficient evidence, rationality, perseverance and last but not the least a positive approach to failure.

Suppression of creativity and scientific ideas in the name of religion, culture and traditions is rampant in most part of the country. People still treat scientific advances as foreign invasion on their religion, culture and traditions.

Why we haven’t produced intellectual ideas and social reforms because, Glorification of works done by ancestors is a habit of Indians. Just because, people merely follow what has been told to them than doing something creative, some primitive work done by ancestors becomes so sacred that it can’t questioned and reformed.

Respected PM Sir, Indian Citizens of all age groups like to watch TV. So, small video clips (of 30-60 sec.) prepared by Scientists from Govt. R&D laboratories can be telecast in place of few advertisements. This method will educate our citizens on science and such scientific clips can grow scientific temperament among them. Some subjects for video clips can be, why sun is yellow, why sky is blue, why animals can see at night etc. Kind Regards, Dr.Vaibhav Patankar, Mumbai
