Innovative ideas on circular economy in E-waste

Today, electronic waste poses a significant challenge for society. With the introduction of innovative features and up-gradation, people are changing their devices by discarding the old ones, thereby contributing to the generation of electronic waste significantly.

Replacing the linear systems with circular in electrical and electronic equipment intends to maximize value at each life-cycle stage by reusing, repairing, recovering remanufacturing, regenerating products and material.

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) observes Swachhata Pakhwada 2022 from 1st February 2022 to 15th February 2022 promoting ‘E-waste se Raksha- Swachhata hi Suraksha’. Citizens are invited to share their innovative ideas on how circular economy practices can help in sustainable and efficient E-waste Management.

The best entries from the citizens will be identified by the Ministry and will be featured on the MyGov page.

The last date to receive suggestions is 15th February 2022.

The Government shall make it mandatory for OEM to buy a certain percentage of recycled items as input for their products through various suppiers of input componets/ child parts. An online monitoring system of e-waste generation to recycled retrieved items shall be put in place as done with other industrial wastes to measure the effectiveness of the Circular Economy. A committee can be formed with members from OEMs, the proposed JV and Recyclers, Sub- assemblers/component manufacturers and Government to monitor the data of percentage yield from recycling and reuse of raw materials.

This would make JV viable also as it would ensure waste volume from different OEM channels This JV would collect the waste gadgets and segregate the waste into different categories of wastes. Plastic parts shall be sent to plastic recycling channel partner. Metallic parts such as screws, clamps etc shall be sent to metal recycling companies. Wiring harness and cables can be sent to copper recycling companies Gold and silver can be retrieved using appropriate available technology.

The advantage with this system would be that different OEMs can get physically similar products such as mobiles, laptops, desktop computers etc as scrap at the end of life cycle. It is important to note that a mobile or laptop of one company have similar components inside when it comes to scrapping and salvaging. Government shall form an entity similar to Common ETPs in industrial areas to collect the waste products from different channels of various OEMs, segregate and route the waste to right recyclers. It is important as every OEM would not be able to invest in waste recycling separately as it would add to their operating costs enormously. This entity can be a joint venture company of different OEMs and Government. One such company is already formed for scrappage of end of life cycle of vehicles.

Strict instructions should be given to manufacturers to maintain well informative manuals to educate customers.if there is any fault need not to go for new one.with small repair or single component change will make it to work again as usually.service stations should be maintained by manufacturers at less charge for repairs.

In our country due to low purchasing capacity in people there is a very need of recycling e waste . In telecom and electronic sector we import it from China and other countries. We can start such type of industries where waste materials of electronic items can be used and cheap electronic items can be made for low income group public.

Cirular Economy in e-Waste would have certain nececessary entities. 1) OEM (Source of product- future e-Waste) 2) Retailer (front end interface to sell the product and possible collector of e-Waste) 3) Consumer (User of product) 4) Kabadiwala (one of the collectors of e-Waste) 5) Re-cyclers (receiver of e-Waste for recycling) 6) Government Every OEM has a supply chain for sourcing the components going into manufacturing. Similarly, every OEM shall develop a disposal chain for salvaging the material gone into the manufacturing of the product. A single entity can never have expertise to retrieve different categories of wastes such as plastics, glass, conventional metals such as copper, steel and precision metals such as gold and silver. Segregation of waste and to channelize rightly for increasing yield from waste is important. OEM of electronic items can form a separate entity to get the items collected at end of life cycle similar to what is being done with batteries.
