Innovative ideas on circular economy in E-waste

Today, electronic waste poses a significant challenge for society. With the introduction of innovative features and up-gradation, people are changing their devices by discarding the old ones, thereby contributing to the generation of electronic waste significantly.

Replacing the linear systems with circular in electrical and electronic equipment intends to maximize value at each life-cycle stage by reusing, repairing, recovering remanufacturing, regenerating products and material.

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) observes Swachhata Pakhwada 2022 from 1st February 2022 to 15th February 2022 promoting ‘E-waste se Raksha- Swachhata hi Suraksha’. Citizens are invited to share their innovative ideas on how circular economy practices can help in sustainable and efficient E-waste Management.

The best entries from the citizens will be identified by the Ministry and will be featured on the MyGov page.

The last date to receive suggestions is 15th February 2022.

A circular economy approach to management of e-waste will play an important role in resource efficiency, reduction in pollution and waste, longer product-life, recovery of precious and rare materials, minimization of occupational and health hazards as well as in giving an impetus to the evolution of recycling industry

Humankind’s insatiable demand for electronic devices is creating the world’s fastest-growing waste stream. Some forms are growing exponentially. The United Nations calls it a tsunami of e-waste. While more electronic devices are part of the problem, they also can be a big part of the solution. A more digital and connected world will help us accelerate progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering unprecedented opportunities for emerging economies.Get it right and we will see a lot less of our precious minerals, metals and resources dumped into landfill. The benefit to industry and workers as well as the health of people and the environment could be enormous. It is crucial we swiftly employ a more circular vision in this sector.

At present, there is a lack of industrial e-waste managers with an appropriate environmental controls, which are required for large-scale recovery of precious and base metals.  A few emerging Indian companies extract metals from e-waste, but they have limited processing capacity. Most of the e-waste processed by a formal sector is exported from other countries with the necessary large-scale infrastructure for metals extraction. In contrast, the informal sector extracts metals using methods such as open-air incineration and acid leaching, which are hazardous and exacerbate environmental pollution and health risks.
