Tribal economy forms an important criterion for classifying Scheduled Tribes in India. The dominant economies of the tribes are:
(1) Hunting, fishing and food gathering,
(2) Shifting cultivation and lumbering, and
(3) Sedentary cultivation and animal husbandry
* Following are the main tribal economies : Food-Gatherers and Hunters: The nomadic tribes like the Andamanese, Onge, Kadar, Kharia, Jarawa, Lodha, etc. practice hunting and food gathering. They practice a subsistence economy and have a simple type of social organization.
* Agriculture economy evolved through various stages like Shifting cultivation, Highland cultivation, Plain land cultivation, Irrigation-based cultivation and Intensive cultivation.
* The land less tribal people should be assisted by raising the forest resources like nursery, and the state government should purchase seeding from them to raise their economic status.

*to ensure that they make durable things less in number putting the same effort i.e.two at a time instead of five at a time
*provision of improved living conditions to help them work better
*ensuring a standard fixed pay to all the tribals engaged in their work
adoption of these three standard measures will atleast ensure promotion and improvement of tribal economy
