The first National Handloom Day was organised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 at Chennai.
It is the 7th National Handloom Day.
This day is observed annually to create awareness about Handloom Industry amongst the public at large and its contribution to the socio-economic development. As over 70% of handloom weavers and allied workers are women, it acts as a key to women empowerment.
