The country is well endowed with many metallic and non-metallic mineral resources.  India is a leading player in respect of many non fuel minerals including, iron ore, bauxite, dolomite, lime stone and mica.  Mining sector (non-fuel) currently accounts for approx 0.5% of GDP.  For accelerated economic growth on sustainable basis, this sector has to grow at a much faster pace to secure   a higher percentage in the GDP.

Scientific, sustainable and transparent mining practices require well trained manpower.  Skill development not only enhances productivity and safety at work place, but more importantly, it prepares the manpower to adapt to the new state of art technologies. Currently this sector employs around 0.2 Million workforce which is estimated to grow to 0.3 Million in next 10 years.

It is really needed that govt. takes this initiative. Mining sector is limited to a region. It is a need that knowledge about this sector is spread across the whole country. This will inspire youth to see mining sector as their SERIOUS carrier opportunity.

skill development should be undertaken by the private sector as govt authorities are neither efficient nor they have adequate infrastructure. Govt employees are not serious to their job or responsibilities compare to private sector.

Nature has to change. We Indians majorly focus on just to get the things done and rarely thinks about how part and even rarely retains the how part of it. Skills means "How you do it" and not just "You did it"!

Respected Sir, My view in this program should be privatized, there are major monopoly and oligopoly players in the mining industry. They are master what they do..and they have great amount of values, and Knowledge. This can be utilized as rotational basis.

Moreover, the government authorities are not professional trainers and they do not have experience in the the sector in which training is provided. So, it makes no sense to get this job done by professional trainers. The government must just foresee that the program is executed fairly and efficiently.

In my opinion the skill development exercise in any sector should be done by private sector, more specifically by organizations who professionally train people. They can together with the sector (mining or any other) can develop courses of various levels and certification exam. Once a candidate completes and pass the certification exam, he can take that certificate as proof of his acquired skill.
