The country is well endowed with many metallic and non-metallic mineral resources.  India is a leading player in respect of many non fuel minerals including, iron ore, bauxite, dolomite, lime stone and mica.  Mining sector (non-fuel) currently accounts for approx 0.5% of GDP.  For accelerated economic growth on sustainable basis, this sector has to grow at a much faster pace to secure   a higher percentage in the GDP.

Scientific, sustainable and transparent mining practices require well trained manpower.  Skill development not only enhances productivity and safety at work place, but more importantly, it prepares the manpower to adapt to the new state of art technologies. Currently this sector employs around 0.2 Million workforce which is estimated to grow to 0.3 Million in next 10 years.

Skill development is a public-private partnership issue. I share the govt's view that only the govt. should not be held responsible for all the development. Private sector has vast talent and technical resources that can be immediately harnessed to undertake a lot of research and development required to chalk out a plan for skill development in mining or any other sector. Models need to be studied and then a suitable skill development plan to be put in place in record time.

I think that it should be undertaken by private sector because as per the present situation in the country, private sector people are much more equipped with the skill development skills and they can teach in much better way to the people. It has another reason also if they do well, they can be given further chances and they will be renowned in the country by their work which I think any govt. employee will hardly bother. Further they will be under pressure to do their best...
