Taking serious note of the latest decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Administration has speed up the enforcement of ban imposed on the use of polythene carry bags/plastic bags/plates/cups and other allied material in Union Territory of Chandigarh. As per NGT directions there is also provision of imposing fine of Rs.5, 000/- "Environmental Compensation" to the erring person/entity per event, along with seizure of such stocks.

With the help of this discussion platform the Administration requests you to 'report the violations' (attach pictures or other details) regarding use of plastic carry bag/plate/cup and allied items on ww.mygov.in. Also, we would like to read your suggestions/ideas as well as practical/workable solutions for complete imposition of plastic (carry bag/cup/plate and allied items) ban in Chandigarh.

I heard about a Bangalore boy who patented technology of preparing cups and plates using banana leaves. Appreciating such talent and adopting such policy and apply it strictly will bring massive change. If we dump such plates and remaining food which thrown after many parties or puja, in a dumping ground ,we can also fertilizer from this. This is possibly the most easily adoptable policy.

Yes the ban on the plastic bag is obvious but many of our brothers livelihood is based on this.Firstly we have to think on the alternative to plastic bag which are jute bags and paper bags or cloth bags can also be used.To bring into force for jute bags we should uplift and motivate farmers as the max cultivation and only is limited to West Bengal which should also grow to some extent to other areas.For paper bags we should use the recycled paper which can be brought from the books whichwould..

We Indians do not accept any change until a huge penalty is imposed. According to me anyone carrying a Polyethylene Bag must be fined at least 50/- as many times he is caught by the authorities even on a single day. This will compel everyone to carry a cloth Bag like the good old days of our childhood

Plastic bags & related packaging materials should be eliminated in a phase-wise manner. Poly-bags could be banned as in Sikkim. The gov could encourage the Cottage industries to produce jute,cotton & paper bags as substitutes. The finances could be arranged through MUDRA Funds & Training from local gov training centres.

No ban needed, big 5kg and above reusable plastic carry bags, should be allowed at a cost. Small carry bags & packaging of toffees, soaps etc should be banned. People should be educated against littering of polythene. These practices would save lakhs of people employed in this industry. Polythene in itself is not harmful but littering of polythene is harmful. Proper collection system of MSW & recycling processes should be put in place. Jai Hind Jai Bharat.

There are many small scale industries thriving on this. Banning will affect their livelihood.The major culprit in the entire scenario is disposal system and people's culture on throwing plastic wastes.Instead of banning, it is better to design better disposal system. Instead of fining the people who sell plastics, it is better to fine the people who dispose plastic items improperly.The fine should be implemented in such a way that it actually changes the culture of disposing plastic bags/goods.

1. Heavy fine to be charged if someone uses plastic 2. Ban the plastic making factories 3. Promote the use of paper bags, cloth bags 4. Promote use of steel and terracotta glasses and reusable and recyclable plates. For example plates made of Banana tree trunk or banana leaves 5. Awareness drives and campaigns to sensitize people about the harmful effects of use of plastic 6. Distribution of cloth/paper bags
