Department of Telecommunications (DoT) through their letter dated 27th February 2019 has informed that Indian Railways has proposed to install an Ultra-high-speed LTE based communication corridor along their network for Train-Ground and Train-Train communication. In this connection Indian Railways has requested DoT to reserve 15 MHz of spectrum in 700 MHz band for the purpose and to begin with 10 MHz to be allocated free of cost as the proposal is devoid of any commercial gain, but only for enhancing security and passenger amenities. Through the said letter, DoT has also requested TRAI to provide recommendations on administrative allotment of spectrum to Indian Railways and the quantum, price, appropriate frequency band (including 450-470 MHz band) and any other related issue.

A Consultation Paper on “Allotment of Spectrum to Indian Railways for Public Safety and Security Services” has been released to discuss the issues involved. Written comments on the issues raised in the Consultation Paper are invited from the stakeholders by 22nd July 2019 and counter-comments by 5th August 2019.

For any clarification / information Shri S.T. Abbas, Advisor (Networks, Spectrum & Licensing), TRAI may be contacted at Telephone Number +91-11-23210481.

Nice idea. It will definitely benefit the passenger on board. Railway tickets can be purchased. Announcement will be easy to reach the passenger. Calling police in case of an emergency, Food, Cleanliness maintenance. Complaint redressal & more. Please let them know – spectrum rent should not be added to railway fare. Wishing all the best.

Dear team; My suggestion is that :- 1) Railways safety is first & foremost concern. For this each & every compartment must have CCTV cam, Speakers or microphone whatever for announcements for any serious issues by the driver or guard for passengers. Each compartment must have sufficient digital display for displaying the nxt and the previous station. 2) All LHB rakes should be very much clean. I mean clean and hygienic. It should be ensures that, all coaches should have a dustbin for waste.

It's nice idea to have connectivity for security and safety. Along with this railway should have a GPS DISPLAY stating which station is arriving and it's locations update. Railway department should have Security camera work with synchronisation network. Railway department should ensure that the sellsman should not enter inside train including passanger and superfast trains. TC do not allow common man with ticket inside railway coach even there is vacant seat without reservation TC allow salesman

It's an very needy and urgent plan to be implemented.. in India 90/ of middle and lower class people will travel ... 80 / of females depends on it .. train traveling will be best especially for ladies and physically challenged people when DoT is implemented.... We can avoid many bad things... And when telecommunication is implemented in train ...no of passengers also increases.. it's too safety for ladies..

seems a good initiative towards ensuring safety and punctuality. But the free of cost provision can be avoided. Railways can purachase this. The cost incurred can be recovered just by increasing efficiency of railway service. Also railway can hire some telecom provider preferably through auction process. Further, the already installed towers should be used as far as possible to avoid problems related to radiations .
