Department of Telecommunications (DoT) through their letter dated 27th February 2019 has informed that Indian Railways has proposed to install an Ultra-high-speed LTE based communication corridor along their network for Train-Ground and Train-Train communication. In this connection Indian Railways has requested DoT to reserve 15 MHz of spectrum in 700 MHz band for the purpose and to begin with 10 MHz to be allocated free of cost as the proposal is devoid of any commercial gain, but only for enhancing security and passenger amenities. Through the said letter, DoT has also requested TRAI to provide recommendations on administrative allotment of spectrum to Indian Railways and the quantum, price, appropriate frequency band (including 450-470 MHz band) and any other related issue.

A Consultation Paper on “Allotment of Spectrum to Indian Railways for Public Safety and Security Services” has been released to discuss the issues involved. Written comments on the issues raised in the Consultation Paper are invited from the stakeholders by 22nd July 2019 and counter-comments by 5th August 2019.

For any clarification / information Shri S.T. Abbas, Advisor (Networks, Spectrum & Licensing), TRAI may be contacted at Telephone Number +91-11-23210481.

It's a good move. Public Safety should be the prime concern of Railways. So, by getting Spectrum allotment, they can improve public safety. Accident rates are very high in our Railways. They should do whatever possible to make the accident level to 'Zero'. Simultaneously, the Coaches should be modernised, especially, for Southern Railway. Thanks.

I feel rather than handing over a complete bandwidth we should allow BSNL to assume the responsibility of providing the necessary communication service and if necessary, take up the proposed spectrum. That way some business will roll into the coffers of these (MTNL) telecom giants. Together MTNL & BSNL can also provide internet to passengers and perhaps partially provide the railways with their internal communications.

Indeed Good Idea to have Allotment of spectrum to Indian Railways for Public Safety and Security services. It will Help 1 Fast, Accurate Communication. 2 Help For Precautionary measure in advance to be taken for preventing Accidents. 3 Help Prevent Railway Accidents in advance. 4 Help in Catching the Thief or any illegal activities happened in Railway Station,Railway Tracks and Boggy. 5 Help in improving in Net Connectivity 6 Will Give Birth to New E- Railway Service Safety & Security

This is really good initiative from railway but as a suggestion they should consider other things together as well such as CCTV camera, live GPS tracking, wifi and better solution for disabled people. Because while we are spending money why not make sure that we will cover all possible technologies for coming 20 to 40 years. We have enough Man power so we should use them properly.

Namaste hi, To provide a leased life for Bsnl,  suggest the following: 1. Implementing a rule that all the auto rickshaws,  taxis,  public transportation,  buses,  school buses,  to attach with a GPS device and controlled by the respective departments/at entry level.   2. Every vehicle to have QR code scanning and emergency services number to track the vehicle.  This will save the safety of passengers especially women,  school going children,  senior citizens etc.
