When schools fail to awaken self‑discipline, it signals a deeper imbalance in the way education is being practiced. Self‑discipline isn’t just about rules or obedience—it’s the inner strength to align one’s actions with higher values, to cultivate responsibility, and to nurture freedom with awareness. If schools neglect this, a few symptoms emerge:
- Dependence on external control 🏫
Students rely on punishment or reward rather than inner conviction.
- Loss of intrinsic motivation 🔥
Learning becomes mechanical, driven by grades or fear, not curiosity or Dharma.
- Weakness in character formation 🌿
Without self‑discipline, resilience, compassion, and ethical discernment remain underdeveloped.
- Societal consequences 🌍
A generation may grow up skilled but not centered, intelligent but not wise, capable but not trustworthy.
Vedantic thought would say that true education is śikṣā—a drawing out of the soul’s discipline, not a stuffing in of information.
