We appreciate our Greater Chennai Municipal Corporation (GCC) for privaticing solid waste management functions. Nowadays door to door garbage collectors are regularly visiting our area for the collection of domestic waste and we are happy. These garbage collecting workmen are taking our signatures or our photographs to establish a record as a proof of job had been done. The issue is there is a hygienic risk and the privacy of individuals is affected in this process. We expect GCC to implement a remote monitoring system by installing GPS devices on all garbage collecting vehicles (including door to door collecting small vehicles) and monitor compliance status of waste collections from a centralised control centre. Big vehicles (dump trucks) should have arrangements to monitor seat belt violations and speed limit violations.
