Section 161 of Railway act indicates “If any person driving or leading a vehicle is negligent in crossing an unmanned level crossing, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to one year.”

Section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that “Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing shall cause the vehicle to stop and the driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk up to the level crossing and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side and then pilot the motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side before the railway track is crossed”

However due to non-following of relevant rules by the road users, many accidents are occurring resulting in loss of precious life  at unmanned level crossings.

Suggest solutions for reducing accidents at unmanned level crossings.

one thing that could be done is to install a kind of 'siren system' at the unmanned crossings controlled by the nearest railway station. with an approximate estimation of time reaching next unmanned station siren could be ringed by person incharge. siren tone should be distinct one and audible enough to be heard from atleast 500 metres. for eg. when a police van or ambulance arrives one could recognize it from a distance.

This perhaps can be avoided by installing a simple yet special device at the unmanned railway crossing for the common people. It will glow green indicating no train within danger limit-safe to cross and red -train approaching and the intensity of red going up as the train comes near.

The primary causes of accidents at unmanned level crossings include failure of road users’ mis-adventure to cross level crossings in the face of an approaching train; road vehicles getting stalled at the locations; rash driving of un-licensed tractor drivers etc. Accidents at level crossings happen primarily because the road users do not respect the right of way of railways.
