There should be traffic lights at every crossing and there should be law of penalty who breaks this traffic signal. Patrolling of such crossings must be included in duty of Indian Police and they should be given authority to immediately penalize (fine+suspension of driving licence for some time) of the people who break the signal. With successful implementation for few years; we can see substantial decrease of such accidents. Penalize will be of course better than seeing them hurt in accident.

It is suggested Railway should remove the time table by using a simple formula any time any where by maintaining 4 line express as like buses for example Howrah to chennai 6 bogies as CH 1-CH 6 + to Hydrabad 6 bogies as HD 1- HD 6 + TO Bangalore 6 bogies as BNG 1- BNG 6 +Trivandram TR1-TR6=24 bogies a complete link express which can be connected any where as your possible trains. The Reservation may be only current and no refund. it will help to stop black marketing and platform neat & clean

To know water position of the bogies of train there must be a water level glass fitted.so this will help the passenger to know the position and can order to fill in the nearest junction

unmanned level crossings . a shame for any civilised nation. the solution is however very simple. just put up traffic lights on the road side of the crossings to indicate whether it is safe to cross or not. which can be easily controlled from the nearest railway station.
yet some people may ignore the warning and get killed. nothing serious. it happens in road traffic too. as exception not the rule

Good idea of GPS. But you should have your navigation system. Till then take the village panchayats into confidence, deploy the people with proper value addition to warn the people about the movement trains at the unmanned level crossings. This can be adopted as an immediate measure and subsequently technological advancements can be implemented.

We are talking of digital India . Why not we install GPS based automatic barriers which works on Solar energy. Such Kind of development should be given as Project to all IIT's where work by students will not only help resolve our paining issues but also education becomes experience based.

Eliminate all unmanned crossings
1) build overpasses or underpasses as required in all such places.
2) build alternate paths or roads where possible to divert road traffic.
