Section 161 of Railway act indicates “If any person driving or leading a vehicle is negligent in crossing an unmanned level crossing, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to one year.”

Section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that “Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing shall cause the vehicle to stop and the driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk up to the level crossing and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side and then pilot the motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side before the railway track is crossed”

However due to non-following of relevant rules by the road users, many accidents are occurring resulting in loss of precious life  at unmanned level crossings.

Suggest solutions for reducing accidents at unmanned level crossings.

A system in which the train driver can engage to close the gate when within certain distance of the crossing using GPS. Also, the barriers to have sensors to not harm anyone accidentially in close proximity. Alarm with the driver in case gate not closed.

Automatic barriers guided by electromagnetic waves based sensors which can sense the approaching trains from either side and closes and opens the gate as required can only prevent these accidents. If railway develops its own such system then it will replace the whole system of manned and unmanned crossing system and will save lot of expenses accruing to railways in this head.
