Section 161 of Railway act indicates “If any person driving or leading a vehicle is negligent in crossing an unmanned level crossing, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to one year.”

Section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that “Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing shall cause the vehicle to stop and the driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk up to the level crossing and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side and then pilot the motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side before the railway track is crossed”

However due to non-following of relevant rules by the road users, many accidents are occurring resulting in loss of precious life  at unmanned level crossings.

Suggest solutions for reducing accidents at unmanned level crossings.

There should not be any level crossing gate.Road crossing the rail line(track) should be either by overbridge or by underground bridge. In this way accident can be prevented by a large scale and man power will be saved in a large extent, as one maned gate require min.4 staff.

Accidents at Unmanned Level Crossing can be eliminated/ minimise by providing automatic barrier system. We can link these barriers with railways signal which are already automatic(I think). Only a motor is required to operate barriers and a controller to start motor as per signal information. The cost will be very low in comparison to man's salary. Private company's are using such effective and cost reducing method. This is very easy.

Sir, I have one idea. The distance between the rail and the check post should be increased. Then the check post can be provided with provisions to puncture the tyre (eg:nail). Now, even if the driver drives in an unconcious manner then car will not allow him to move fast. Then he will be alert.
