The country is well endowed with many metallic and non-metallic mineral resources.  India is a leading player in respect of many non fuel minerals including, iron ore, bauxite, dolomite, lime stone and mica.  Mining sector (non-fuel) currently accounts for approx 0.5% of GDP.  For accelerated economic growth on sustainable basis, this sector has to grow at a much faster pace to secure   a higher percentage in the GDP.

Scientific, sustainable and transparent mining practices require well trained manpower.  Skill development not only enhances productivity and safety at work place, but more importantly, it prepares the manpower to adapt to the new state of art technologies. Currently this sector employs around 0.2 Million workforce which is estimated to grow to 0.3 Million in next 10 years.

Skills have to be developed. For men & machine, for science & technology, even for our sportspersons within the country. India has got eminent scientists, but our R&D base has to be improved a lot. Govt should ensure that all bottlenecks of R&D are removed & a genuine R&D atmosphere is created so that our great minds with firewings will not fly away to other countries in desperation.

Walk the talk: Privatize Air India.Every rupee of tax collected from poor Indians and utilised to offset Air India’s losses, for instance, is one rupee less on education or healthcare. India’s vulnerable youth should have the first claim on resources as it provides them with building blocks of a better life which, in turn, translates into greater prosperity for society.

I personally feel any skill set is best developed when one first acquires the requisite knowledge of the activity / process and then applies the same on ground. with practice and time the skill refines and is honed. therefore, a combination of class-room education and hands-on training shall be the best approach for developing the skill. Experience and theoretical knowledge go hand in hand for best results.
