India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

Public awareness of various forms of disasters must be generated by Ministry of Home Affairs. Policies and plans must be formulated.Media,NGO help to be enlisted to educate the people of the various forms of disasters and the effective way to tackle them without losing precious lives. Govt.of Odisha displayed great planning and execution during cyclones in the past year. Preparedness of all govt organisations is essential. Vigilance of all citizens recommended in confronting any form of danger.

as i am connected with mining industry therefore myself deeply feel that DISASTER MANAGEMENT system s are urgently required in all mining sector . whatever report sent to the GOVT.are fabricated. DISASTER MANAGEMENT should be treated as an in built part of working life in mining sector. training -retraining should be a continuous process in mining life.---L.N.Bhattacharya.

Due to disruption to local services of C.Rly. there was riot involving youth. To curb down such incidences it is felt that on platform through speaker wide appeal may be made to people to refrain from doing such violent act, informing them that if they caught doing such act, they will punished under so & so section. Such announce must be made immediately after there is any disruption to local services due to any reason. This announcement may subdue the explosive mind of people. Thank you Sir
