India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

Indian Sailors Stranded in Salalah - ship caught fire and sailors lost everything including their passports they are stuck from nearly a weak, they need travel documents to return to india, which the indian govt is arranging and will take time. However, another solution can be that the sailors esp travelling on international waters, must compulsorily wear a thin water proof jacket containing a plastic i-card issued by govt of india like a passport (to be inserted and locked inside the jacket).

1. Map sensitive areas with type of natural calamities that can occur n population count - 'worst case scenario' 2. Set up Recovery centres min.25 - 30 miles away from the disaster prone areas. 3. Establish strong communication channels by the use of cloud technology in the recovery centres 4. Establish awareness camps in the disaster prone areas so that public is aware of what steps are to be taken, in case natural calamity strikes 5. Recovery camps to be equipped basic necessities.

as of now most of the agencies in states are more focused on relief camps, compensation etc. the need is to enhance rescue on which they are dependent on NDRF or armed forces. at least one NDRF styled unit equipped with Helicopters and one trained Battalion from state armed constabulary supported by trained volunteers from organizations such as National Cadet Corps, NSS, students from Physical Education collages can be organized as this will prove helpful in rescue operations.

Local Authorities, NDRF, ARMY and other medical agencies need to come together on a common platform and do frequent mock drills during peace time so that we are well prepared for the any unforeseen events. Currently Ham Radio Operator do not have equal benefits like other countries and Ministry of communication needs to look into this and open more option like any other country for Indian Ham Radio community, which certainly merit in long term and work as an asset to our Nation. We need to form Ham Radio / Amateur Radio networks all over India, where a citizen of INDIA, 12yrs and above can go for Radio license and become a part of community as well as a hobby, which certainly come handy, when other means of communication go down; and also assist in early warning systems using the technology available. We as Ham Radio Operator can not only assist in providing back up communication but being local a place can help with real time information.
