India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

disaster it self can get some awareness to our people to a little extent. even after that our people take chance in life. look at the no of RTA death in india. i feel its mainly because people take chance / ready to risk with out knowing the gravity &, even if they know . they need to wait for a fraction of second but they dont. we never learn. we live as though this is the last chance.?!

We in Uttarakhand experienced that Community Radio is much helpful during disaster. India should take this activity at fore front. So far this area lacks initative and full support.Early warning system is not in place. So CR could be helpful

We appreciate the imitative taken by the Prime Minister for the revival of Radios through MAN KI BAAT PROGRAMME. The radios have always proved to useful instrument in times of emergency, whether it is was or peace, distress or disaster. Radio can prove to be very useful medium for transmitting information regarding the natural disaster. If reliable information is provided beforehand, people can be alert and face the disasters with necessary preparation. Precaution is better than cure.

awareness to listen ,read news is very low in rural and below lower middle class of india. i suggest to keep televisions at railway stations ,bus stands and airports which run DD news round the clock and with a facility of public address system.this way general public can be made more aware about national news .corporates should also run it in their waiting lounges and security control rooms.

I think Indian Disaster Management need to improve relationship like a political party. when any state election going on a state, all the leaders & political workers for a particular party, working in all different states are working on ground in that particular state for his own party. like this why not disaster team of all state take initiative for whose state who is currently suffering for any disaster? why we only looking to central go. for help when we suffer from any disaster?

I think India needs to improve community participation in disaster preparedness. Make cautions through media when forecast disaster. Build all time security personnel on behalf of post disaster event. Regular disaster affected area should take attention. Providing training to local people for how to tackle disaster problems. Research and development should take place to improve anti-disaster technology.

There are already well established methods available for all most all types of disasters. All we need to do is to implement them with active participation from the local (affected/likely to be affected) people.
