Several studies have shown that school children do not seem to acquire age appropriate skills in reading, writing and numeracy. There is a need to explore the various approaches to improve teaching–learning at the elementary stage. The objective of this theme is to understand the issues of low learning achievement levels in elementary schooling, assess the system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and suggest ways and methods of improving the learning outcomes of school children which would result in enhancing the quality of elementary education.

People living in rural areas should be made to realise the importance of their child's education, only then can we ensure good learning outcomes. Most of them think that it is of no use for their child to study and instead make them join their family 'traditions' like working in the fields, etc. As long as compulsary education(and that too at free of cost) is not given to children belonging to lower caste and poorer family ,then nevertheless how hard we try in improving it,it would be to no avail.

Education system must not be replaced or changed abruptly. We need to change it for good. In this process education has to be skill learning based, rather then totally book oriented Also teacher training program needs to be strengthen. Over testing of students must be avoided. Teacher community must be provided to take suitable action for the good of the child and the same to be reinforced so that this community can be firm 4 d duty. Moral education ought to be the part of curriculum.
