Several studies have shown that school children do not seem to acquire age appropriate skills in reading, writing and numeracy. There is a need to explore the various approaches to improve teaching–learning at the elementary stage. The objective of this theme is to understand the issues of low learning achievement levels in elementary schooling, assess the system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and suggest ways and methods of improving the learning outcomes of school children which would result in enhancing the quality of elementary education.

Religious education should be introduced as a subject. The focus should be on teaching about religions and religious philosophy. UK education system has done well in developing curricular for religious education.Sri Jay Lakhani has contributed extensively for developing course curricula for hindu traditions. His services should be sought. The subject of religious education should be well regulated so anything that teaches exclusivism is kept strictly out of the teachings

ROTE LEARNING SHOULD BE DEMOLISHED.... ALL CHILD IS BORN ARTIST THR PROBLEM IS TO REMAIN ARTIST AS THEY GROW UP!!..Free thinking and creativity should be encouraged by revamping whole couse structure and course material.

There should be a system to allocate the students to different streams of learning according to their capability.This basis decided by the govt. should be strictly adhered to by all-both private and govt. organisations.So much of freedom given to private organisations spoils the quality.of course some of the private organisations are well ahead of their govt.counterparts.Corruption has tarnished the image and our national life .Vocational education should emphasized..

A lot of knowledge at one time is like 'khichadi', no one likes but eats to keep away hunger. A little knowledge step by step is like 'paneer' in paneer mutter. Everyone search, take, eat with taking taste and enjoy. Cut the syllabus at least by half, Give time to students to think upon subjects, to develop their own view, and to search for counter example. No parents activity should be involved. No view should be right or wrong. No fear of mistakes needs to grow mind for research & technology

Why did China change their rote learning education policy? to increase research & technology, and see where China is now. Chinese leaders themselves are apparently recognizing this, with Premier Wen Jiabao remarking in 2010 that, “Students don't only need knowledge; they have to learn how to act, to use their brains.We must encourage students to think independently, freely express themselves, get them to believe in themselves, protect and stimulate their imagination and creativity,”.

7 Policy Priorities: 1. Move beyond provisioning and aim for tangible improvement in PROCESSES. 2. Privilege the needs, experiences and strengths of the marginalised to re-design pedagogy, materials. 3. Go beyond an instrumentalist view of education 4. Invest hugely in increasing access to reading and learning material 5. Invest in teachers' ongoing professional development 6. Revive institutions, esp DIETS-BRC-CRC 7. Hold those at top accountable. We need to realise that as enrolment increased, those in govt schools are those who traditionally never attended school - this has increased the diversity in school. With urbanisation, there are now 10+ languages in a slum classroom. The key thing is to evolve our educational process in keeping with the student profile we actually have. This is a major opportunity to redefine and redesign many aspects to ensure that every child - especially a marginalised one - learns and gets a good education.

Dr.Ramaa S. Teachers' competencies and qualities play a major role especially at elementary level of schools. The minimum qualification for teachers should be graduation with training in elementary education. They should get good salary and service conditions. In Government Schools teachers are expected to do many other tasks. They should be allowed to focus on school related activities. At higher primary level teachers from science and maths background should teach these subjects.

Dr.Ramaa S. Children come to elementary schools with diverse backgrounds-cultural/linguistic. Many of them do not have school readiness when they enter schools. Early childhood education plays major role in developing school readiness and bridging the gap between home and school language. Unfortunately children from socially disadvantaged and economically weaker sections are deprived of this opportunity. So provision for scientific early childhood program is a must in all Government Schools .

Dr.Ramaa S, There are several reasons for difficulties in learning basic skills and academics at elementary stage of education. Some are pupil related variables like lack of motivation, below average ability, learning disabilities, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, emotional and behaviour disorders, math anxiety, exam anxiety etc. School related variables include inadequate teaching competencies in creating interest, among students as well meeting the needs of diverse learners.
