Several studies have shown that school children do not seem to acquire age appropriate skills in reading, writing and numeracy. There is a need to explore the various approaches to improve teaching–learning at the elementary stage. The objective of this theme is to understand the issues of low learning achievement levels in elementary schooling, assess the system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and suggest ways and methods of improving the learning outcomes of school children which would result in enhancing the quality of elementary education.

The problem now a days in Elementary schools is that students are made to mug up subjects and not really focus on understanding the importance of them, hence leading them to think that this is a big burden. For example maths, teachers teach in such a way that students are bound to mug up solutions and not explore maths. Also, major focus is given only to science streams, which is very bad. No wonder many of the students end up going to countries abroad and prospering there!

3. Existing RTE also mentions admission of children (dropouts) into new schools on basis of age rather than academic level, which again is disruptive and creates a gap between actual learning level and classroom level. Hence, an informal assessment by school wrt current grade level should be done to determine which standard the child should be admitted to.

Teaching should be such that children are inculcated with sense of social responsibility, ethics, concern for others and values leading to a society of harmony. Swami Vivekananda had stressed the importance of service and concern for others.Healthy competition leads to social responsibility. Unhealthy competition leads to self interest and self centred approach, something which does not lead to upliftment of society.Inspirational teachings of Swami Vivekananda should be introduced in syllabus.

2. This particular clause of mandatory promotion has been well publicized among students who besides missing out on learning also do not experience any failures - giving them a distorted perspective of life and putting them at risk of failure at later stage. Eventually, important years of learning get missed out for most and children with disabilities are the most affected. Hence, request to abolish this clause of "automatic promotion" as soon as possible.

1. Mandatory passing till 8th standard has been shown to have very detrimental effects on learning outcomes. Effects are multifold: a) teachers lose interest in teaching as child moves to higher class anyway and easily put blame on previous teachers, b) low socioeconomic parents poorly educated do not realize that their child is not learning as they themselves cannot judge. c) parents are free from economic burden of repeating standard and hence develop callous attitude towards learning. contd..

The government school children could have been lagging in formal reading/writing as they are not going through the letters/numbers from very early stages while comparing with private school children. But the life skills of these government school children should be identified and those skills should be appreciated and formalized by the society. That too the village children will have more kind of practical knowledge which sometimes the teacher themselves doesn’t know.

Private schools should be asked to reserve some percentage of seats in their first standard for the students who join the school directly in first standard without going through the formal pre kg, lkg, ukg. So that the mother or grand mother who are interested in teaching the child in its early ages could teach the child in one to one effective ways.

Apart from mid day meal, the elementary school children could be given healthy drinks in the breakfast time in schools. Nowadays there is much more emphasis on the breakfast which is identified to stimulate brain activities.

to keep interest alive. The concepts taught in school should also have the utility of that concept. e.g Pythagoras theorem to calculate price of land which shape is irregular. in geography why its colder on hills. if you are going to hill station pack woolen. something like that.

Status of education can be judged from the fact that in the capital of the India getting your ward admitted in nursery is a gigantic task for the parents. There is no clear cut and transparent policy on this. It appears that it is a business. This is how our primary education starts. Probably, education department itself needs to be educated on this issue. Please do something to solve this problem
