Water is a vital resource for life, and for the economy. Nowadays, one of the most serious challenges to solve and manage the water scarcity. With the depletion of water resources, the demand for quality water is increasing day by day. Water utilities are under pressure to provide good quality water, but are struggling with their outdated infrastructure at the same time. Furthermore, one of the major concerns of water utilities is the increasing wastage and pollution of water bodies caused due to metering errors, leaks, pipe bursts, and industrial waste. To manage all these issues, water utilities have to come up with smart water management solutions and techniques.

IoT may be used in potable water monitoring tools to monitor the quality of tap water in all government owned education institutes and public places. It should be applied in real-time detection of leakages and wastes of factories in rivers and other natural water bodies. It can also be used in monitoring of water level variations in rivers, dams and reservoirs, for proactive disaster management.

Smart water management is the combination of smart hardware, smart solutions, and smart services integrated together to minimize wastage and optimize the utilization. Intelligent use of information and analytics can be leveraged to deliver improved outcomes across the water management lifecycle.

With the help of this discussion platform we request you to share your valuable inputs on how IOT can be used in:

• Demand Forecasting and Allocation of water resources
• Water Quality Testing
• Infrastructure Management
• Improve Preparedness and Response to water management system

Your suggestions on the above topics will help us to make an integrated view and plan of action for Smart Water development by applying IoT and analytics.

In my view, first thing we should do that .. we need to clean our Dams, River, Lake etc. it help us to improve our water storage capacity & underground water level... as all River are "Gangas" for all depending population ... But unfortunately our authorities only allow to dump city garbage in River & river side .. it is very harmful to every one.

First of all all lakes to be de silted and the natural path for water flow to the lakes to be restored by demolishing all illegal structures and this will also avoid flooding during rainy season and full lake will make surrounding areas water table to raise considerably which will solve the problem of water scarcity in summer seosons.

#SaveWater: A lot of water is wasted in flush toilets. so, the flush toilets must be replaced with bio-toilets at every level. The bio-toilets must be made compulsory in offices, schools, homes and hospitals. The people with bio-toilets, solar panels and solar water heaters installed, must be given a discount in tax. This will encourage them and will also save a lot of water.

#SmartWaterManagement: There are many leaking pipes on the roads. There must be a fixed standard for the pipe fitting procedure and the pipe quality. If the pipe starts leaking before completing 5 years, the contractor has to pay fine and do the next 5 repairs free of cost. There must also be a SCADA SYSTEM installed which gives a message immediately to the office after it detects a leak.

#SmartWaterManagement: Every house must have a device which controls and reads the amount of water being used by that house. 25 liters to each person and 50 more liters to other chores will be supplied to each house. Once the limit gets crossed, the house owner has to pay extra money to every extra 10 liters. This will force them to repair the taps and will make them use water more judiciously. This device has to be installed in every house.A lot of water will be saved.

Sir, We use taps to draw water. We open tap in such a way much water is wasted. My suggestion is Tap Manufacturers may make all taps in such a way that there will be two levels of opening. First level one turns the tap, 50% of flow capacity water flows. If we really need more water then the tap can be further turned to the next click sound, now you get the max water flow. This will surely help each and every organization save water. Because 99% of the people will only open tap to 1st level.
