Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

1. Like the Delhi Metro, you should generate a lot of revenue from advertisements on trains. Like airplanes, trains should have an onboard magazine where you can publish advertisements and generate a lot of revenue. 2. You should make all toilets (at least those in trains) payable. Someone who uses the toilet properly will have to pay Re 1, while someone who doesn't use it properly will have to pay a high fine. This will also make us Indians use train toilets in a tidy manner.

People waste a lot of money in hotels.Indian railway must increase its lodging capacity so that people can stay over night safely in the "railway hotels".The charges may be included in the tickets at the time of booking. #nonfarerevenue

IR should tie-up with cab service providers such as Ola, Uber etc. and offer door to door service to passengers which can be charged extra to the passengers on a revenue share basis with the cab service providers.

Indian Railways need to think why we do not have Without Tickets Passengers in Metros. Why we cannot upgrade Indian Railways Stations on Metro Models Ticket Issued should be used as entry boarding pass in railway stations.

(a)The future of our world depends on using less fossil fuels or in combination with reusable energy.Roof tops of stations can be fitted with solar panels for harvesting power which can be used for reducing current bills. (b)The diesel engines used, needs to be phased out for fuel efficient or electric ones which can reduce significant spending on fuel (c)Fines to be enforced for ticketless access, misuse of platform tickets and other activities in turn improving revenue and security at station

Indian Railway Should introduce at least 2 coaches of Chair Car so that Short distance travellers (50 Kms to 400 Kms) should not bound to book in 3AC. This will also increase seat availability of 3AC for all route travellers.

Indian Railway should join Hands with Delhi Metro / Other Metros and update their Station as metro stations and replace Local Trains with Metro like trains. This will improve the metro service as well as Indian railway Standard. We can study the model used in Japan under Tokyo Metro. Local trains in Japan runs a metro within Tokyo and Run as local train outside Tokyo region.
