Our country has made significant progress in bringing down the number of death among children below 5 years. However the number of child deaths is still very high. Children are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition and infectious diseases, many of which can be prevented and managed with appropriate timely interventions. Through this platform Department of Health Research/ Indian Council of Medical research invites suggestions, views, best practices, innovative ideas to be tested through research to improve health of children and prevent avoidable deaths.

Save 1000 newborns daily with oral cefixime 7 Cefixime is oral. Affordable, available medicine to save thousands of newborns daily. DO not neglect this letter. Try it. Give up if it fails. Those who oppose this contribute to 1000 + newborn deaths by obstructing life saving idea.

Conslusion : Oral cefixime appears to be safe and effective alternative to parentally administered ampicillin and tobramycin in preventing early onset sepsis in infants at risk of infection.

Save 1000 newborns daily with oral cefixime 6 Focal infection developed in 2 infants in the cefixime group.( conjunctivitis 2, pyoderma 1).We also noted that some babies did not like the taste of oral cefixime as noted by their facial expression while taking the drug.

Save 1000 newborns daily with oral cefixime 5 Results: 124 neonates were enrolled ( 56 in oral cefixime, 68 in parental ampicillin tobramycin group ). The groups were comparable for weight, gestation, duration and type of antibiotic received prior to delivery and risk factors for sepsis. Only one baby in cefixime group developed septicaemia. Side effects of oral cefixime included vomiting in 3 infants ( 5.4%) and increased stooling frequency in 8 infants (14.4 %).

Save 1000 newborns daily with oral cefixime 4 Those born on odd dates were given intravenous ampicillin and tobramycin and served as control. Antibiotics were given for 5 days.Cord samples of babies were evaluated for Hb, TLC, DLC, general blood picture, micro Esr, and C reactive protein. Babies were followed up daily in hospital for signs and symptoms suggestive of sepsis and any adverse effect of drugs.

Save 1000 newborns daily with oral cefixime 3 Babies with birth asphyxia, meconeum aspiration syndrome, any other condition which precluded oral feeding e.g. apneic spells were excluded. Also excluded were babies who developed septicaemia within 8 hours of birth despite receiving prophylactic antibiotics. Neonates born on even dates were given oral cefixime 8 mg/kg./day as a single dose within 2 hours of birth.

Save 1000 newborns daily with oral cefixime 2 Setting : Neonatology unit of tertiary hospital. Methods: Babies of gestational age of 34 weeks or more and birth weight of 1.8kg. or more with one or more of following risk factors were included.: (1). Leaking per vagina > 18 hours. (2) Maternal intrapartum fever ( > 38 degrees centigrade), and ( 3 ) foul smelling liquor. All these babies were otherwise healthy and asymptomatic at birth.
