The scourge of unsanitary toilets can be tackled by employing technology. E-toilets with self disposal can be substituted by unsanitary toilets in villages, towns and metropolitan cities in a phased manner. These e-toilets can be developed in public private partnership mode. Industrial houses can also finance the construction and development of e-toilets as a part of their corporate social responsibility. Human excreta can be recycled as manure to be used in agriculture.

The major constraint in eliminating manual scavenging is rehabilitation of manual scavengers and substitute for insanitary latrines. The first can be tackled by employing manual scavengers in gainful employment in small scale and cottage industries, handicrafts, carpet making and other alternative avocations like plumbing and carpentry by skill development and vocational training in the fields mentioned above.

manual scavenging continues in 21st century India due to 15th century mentality of its people. The non scavengers don't want to change as human labour comes cheap, and the scavengers are mentally subjugated(they have lost all hope of any change). They do it for lack of any other option to earn livelihood. If we educate them & develop their skills, such that they are able to earn enough to save a little, there would be no scavengers left. Educate.Empower.Eradicate

Manual scavenging is a menace to our society really. We must stop it, we should develop our toilet in a way that doesnt facilitate such nuisance. Smart toilets with effective measures like if anyone leave his/her excreta in a place which is not made for it, should trigger alarm and thereby imposing fine or making that very individual to clean it properly. Though this type of measures would attract extra costs but maintenance work is required and to nab untidy persons
