Corporation of Chennai is preparing a proposal towards Smart City Challenge which would include city wide smart urban solutions as well as identification of areas within the city for its implementation.

The proposal would be defined primarily based on voice of Chennai residents. An extensive citizen engagement programme is established by Corporation of Chennai to document the views and concernsfor the same.

Residents may post their opinion and ideas on civic services such as transport, parking, water supply, sanitation, energy, housing, IT solutions,health, education, safety and security. Your views, opinion and solutions on urban issues faced by Chennai would not only support a better tomorrow for Chennaites, it will also make Chennai a strong contender for getting shortlisted as one of the first 20 cities in India to implement Smart City Solutions in Phase 1.

Chennai citizen and community is its biggest strength. Let’s participate to make this proposal inclusive and meaningful for every common man, every citizen.

The last date to submit your comments is 15th October, 2015.

Whether the tag 'Smart City' is given to Chennai is predominantly depend upon the improving the traffic system. A type of surgical approach is required to streamline the zig-zag driving, extensive usage of horns, usage head-lamps in high-beam mode etc.,. People should have a feel that we are entering the disciplined traffic 'Smart City' Chennai. That will create a separate identity for Chennai among the proposed 'Smart cities'

The Cholavaram lake desilted and strengthened d the capacity will be increased to 1,080 mcft. The Porur lake desilted and deepened capacity will be increased to 70 mcft. The banks of Ayanambakkam lake strengthened, the water body will be deepened and its capacity will be increased to 314 mcft. The Nemam lake will be refurbished and its capacity will be increased to 577mcft A total of 568 mcft water can be stored additionally in these lakes with this initiative.

The new storage capacity will be created at Thervaikandigai, Thirukandalam and Ramanjeri by 1 TMC ft each. Another 0.9 TMC ft will be added by restoring six tanks, namely, Nemam, Porur, Iyambakkam, Ambattur, Korattur and Madhavaram and a further 0.3 TMC ft by deepening the Cholavaram tank

The CMA has got 22 water courses – amongst them are Kosasthaliyar, Cooum and Adyar Rivers, Buckingham Canal, and the Red Hills, Chembarambakkam and Sholavaram tanks. These three tanks are the main sources of water supply to Chennai city. Many of the water bodies are facing problems of not only encroachments reducing their extent, but also the discharge of raw sewage, dumping of solid wastes, etc. and have caused pollution beyond acceptable limits.

Maintenance of Water bodys With the population increasing over the decades, the city has faced water supply shortages, and its ground water levels have been depleted. The coastal city of Chennai as a metropolitan population of 8.24 million as per 2011 census. As the city lacks a perennial water source, catering the water requirements of the population has remained an arduous task.
