Taking serious note of the latest decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Administration has speed up the enforcement of ban imposed on the use of polythene carry bags/plastic bags/plates/cups and other allied material in Union Territory of Chandigarh. As per NGT directions there is also provision of imposing fine of Rs.5, 000/- "Environmental Compensation" to the erring person/entity per event, along with seizure of such stocks.

With the help of this discussion platform the Administration requests you to 'report the violations' (attach pictures or other details) regarding use of plastic carry bag/plate/cup and allied items on ww.mygov.in. Also, we would like to read your suggestions/ideas as well as practical/workable solutions for complete imposition of plastic (carry bag/cup/plate and allied items) ban in Chandigarh.

Imposition of ban on plastic carry bags, cups, plates and allied items by the National Green tribunal seems not to be appropriate. This decision shows that due to negligent General Public and Administration the Judiciary has taken a short cut and it has decided to imposition of ban rather to punish litterbugs. In USA plastic consumption is 9 kg per person annually whereas in India it is 1.220 kg per person annually. Even then USA is neat and clean but India is not. I suggest fine litterbugs only

Good morning I am a student of Dikshant International School My New year resolution I will not throw polythene bags in dustbin or anywhere. I will collect all plastic bags and hand it over to vegetable street vendor. Plastic bags are not bad, but our habits. Himanshu Class VIII Dikshant International School Zirakpur Shimla highway, Punjab.

हमे कोल ड्रिंक की बोतल के लिए नियम बनाना चाहिए की वो अपने प्रेय पदार्थ गत्ते की बोतल में बिक्री करेंगे जेसे real topicona कंपनिया अपने फ्रूट जूस बेच रहे है और गुटका तम्बाखू बिस्किट और अन्य खाद्य पदार्थ भी प्लास्टिक पैकिंग की बजाय गत्ते य कागज की पैकिंग में आने चाहिए

Share Your Views...NGT should focus on the india's capital - in delhi too. As there is already a law for ban on sale, use and manufacturing plastic carry bags. But on the implementation side it is very negative, so NGT and the every department related to the issue should be take more focus in delhi to give a good lesson to the other states.

The paper /cloth bags are great alternate to plastic bags. Many stores like Reliance etc have started using it effectively. The bags must have a printed message " Free environment of Plastics " etc !! People must be encouraged to bring their cloth bag from home. Currently , I see most of the people not carrying an option than to ask for bag from shop vendor ( which is mostly plastic )

Plastic plates ,cups etc these are also responsible for creating mess...for this we have a solution..Bagasse(leftover of sugarcane after removing it's juice) made eco friendly disposable plates n cups. But the main problem is it's cost....a plate costs around Rs5 which is actually too much but the concept is good. (visit pappco.com to know more about it) Make it compulsory to use such type of plates and cups and also setup small scale industries for manufacturing these.

Alternative of plastic bags is Jute bags...disposable eco friendly but costs too much...1kg of Jute bag is for Rs120 where 1kg of plastic bag is for Rs20, so we have to lower the prices of Jute bags so that vendors and people able to buy it. 2nd is Biodegradable plastic bags made from Corn starch(see attachment)..which i think is costly but with proper investment and planning prices can be reduced i think.
